Executive Development

Introduction

We speak with healthcare leaders everyday through our recruitment activity and we understand the pressures leaders are under to build sustainable futures whilst constantly delivering high quality care.

As a result, our Development Division has been established to support healthcare leaders either individually, in boards and management teams, or in wider health and social care systems.

But we wanted to bring something different to the table - a focus on helping healthcare organisations become more capable and returning investment back into the healthcare system - and our services and our people reflect this.

Whilst all of our services are tailored, we have a core of 3 areas which are explained in these pages:

Effective Governance Support
  • Enabling Trusts and other healthcare organisations complete effective self and peer-reviews
  • Learning more about good governance practice
  • Practical recommendations to improve governance and organisational performance
Executive Development
  • Accredited learning programmes
  • Aspirant Director programmes
  • Facilitated board and team development

Executive Coaching
  • Focused support and challenge to enable paradigm shifts
  • Board member focus and confidence
  • Senior manager development and career coaching
And we bring heaps of experience through our associate team, most of whom are practising directors themselves who not only understand board room pressures but who bring practical applications to management thinking.

We have expanded into these areas in recent years because feedback from boards and directors tells us that the increasing complexity of the modern-day NHS requires new ways of seeing the future – so this is our way of making a contribution to building a more robust, more responsive NHS.

Effective Governance Support

Good governance is not just about an effective system, it’s as much about the people who work on and in the system, and the relationships which affect it

We appreciate the healthcare landscape is constantly changing. New commissioning federations are emerging; Trusts are merging to remain viable or grow existing services; health and social care integration models are forming.

These current and future organisational models require effective governance and leadership and we can be on hand to offer innovative, informative and practical guidance to not only avoid common pitfalls but recognise and practise good governance to create increased patient value.

Our Philosophy and Approach:

Our philosophy is based on helping healthcare organisations learn more about what good corporate governance looks and feels like and helping build their capability to continually improve.

Our approach is underpinned and licenced by a European Governance Model® which incorporates recognised standards and indicators of effective governance.

This, in turn, is utilised to improve knowledge and support for numerous areas:

  • Improving board effectiveness through reviews and development
  • Building internal capability to conduct effective self-assessments
  • Board masterclasses on effective corporate governance
  • Facilitated strategy sessions to develop strategic options and
  • Improve value generation
  • Training Peer Trusts to conduct external, independent reviews
  • Conducting cost effective external audits
  • Supporting cultural integration through mergers
  • Advising new organisational models and governance requirements
  • Reviewing corporate meeting structures and effectiveness
  • Providing legal advisory services
Our approaches and model are compatible with the NHSI Well-Led Framework and also enable NHS bodies to obtain a score for their governance effectiveness which can be benchmarked against other organisations. Our team are highly experienced directors who understand the nuances of NHS corporate governance and life in the boardroom, and who bring practical recommendations to improving levels of governance.

Executive Development

When all is said and done, more is often said than done!

We recognise that both current and future leaders need support in thinking and working more strategically in a world which is constantly evolving. For this, we offer a series of leadership programmes and individual modules which support professional development and challenge existing thinking in order to develop potential.

And because we appreciate the importance of academic recognition we have teamed up with the Business School at Leeds Beckett University so that healthcare executives are able to attain appropriate qualifications which are recognised and valued throughout the sector.

Our accredited programmes include Post Graduate Certificate and Diploma courses, enabling leaders to work towards a full Master’s degree in Executive Leadership, and which can be undertaken by both existing and aspiring executives and senior managers.

Other tailored solutions include:

  • Board development planning – supporting Chairs and CEOs to construct effective plans
  • Board succession planning – supporting Chairs to create robust future plans
  • Board masterclasses - short, focused sessions on relevant topics
  • Benchmarking sessions – partnered visits to out of sector organisations

For senior management:

  • Bridging the Gap – an intense, insight programme for aspiring directors and emerging talent
  • Shadow Board programme – created in partnership with the Inspiring Leaders Network (ILN) to provide senior management with the insight into effective board decision making

Other tailored modules and short courses include:

Executive Coaching

Insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results

From our experience of appointing and working with senior healthcare executives we appreciate that new thinking paradigms are required to lead effectively in a world which is more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.

Coaching is a powerful means of supporting senior executive development by supporting and challenging existing thinking and discovering new approaches to current issues.

Whether you are a Chair, non-executive, CEO, executive director or senior manager, our experienced team can provide a sounding board and help you tackle personal challenges to become a more effective leader.

Some typical challenges may include:

  • Leading a highly effective, diverse board
  • Changing existing behaviours
  • Influencing board colleagues and managing board relationships
  • Non-executive support and challenge to enable improved Board performance
  • Leading effective organisational change
  • Balancing board and directorate responsibilities
  • Financial understanding for non-finance directors
  • Career and development coaching for aspiring directors

Our Approach:

At The Finegreen Group, we use a common, simple staged approach to coaching:

  1. Assessment of your needs (Critically making sure we understand what you are looking for)
  2. Choosing your coach and contracting (We provide you with a choice of coaches whom you can interview and select to work with you)
  3. Making it happen (A series of 6x 2-3 hour sessions with your coach to enable you to work through your issue. Your coach is available to you outside of the sessions as and when you need to speak)
  4. Reviewing and measuring (On-going learning discussions between you and your coach to track progress, and which may involve other stakeholders if appropriate)
  5. Closure (An important stage to review success and either end the support and/or agree any future development required)
